Private insurance is available all year round, so you're not limited to just the open enrollment period. Pretty cool, right?
Open enrollment is typically November 1 - January 15. That’s when you don’t need a qualifying life event to switch or change your ACA plans. This is the time you lock in your new plan for the upcoming year.
-
A deductible is the amount you pay first before your insurance starts sharing costs.
The max out-of-pocket is the total limit you’ll pay for covered services in a year—once you hit that number, your insurance covers 100% of eligible expenses.
-
A PPO gives you more flexibility—you can see doctors in or out of network and usually you don’t need a referral to see a specialist, but it comes with higher costs.
An HMO is more restrictive you have to stay in-network and you typically need a referral to see specialists.
-
ACA (Affordable Care Act) plans are government-regulated, cover essential health benefits, and can’t deny coverage for pre-existing conditions—pricing is standardized and often income-based with subsidies.
Private plans aren’t tied to ACA rules, so they’re medically underwritten, they may exclude certain conditions, and vary more in coverage—but can sometimes offer lower premiums and more flexibility depending on the situation.
